Second Life of my DVD-ROM

Posted by raredog in Techie Stuff, ... | 08.06.2007 - 8:47 pm

dead dvdrom
Its the first time that I’ve tried upgrading (flashing) firmware on any of my hardware, and a LG DVD Combo would be my guinea pig. It won’t read DVD’s anymore only CD’s. So I’ve search the internet for some solutions, and one of them is upgrading the firmware.

I download the updated firmware. The procedure was easy, and gave emphasis to close all applications (anti-virus etc..) before updating the firmware. (or else there would be a permanent damage) So I followed everything, then when it was finished I saw “Firmware Successfully Upgraded”. Then the usual task to reboot the pc to take effect.

After the reboot, I placed a dvd inside my dvd-rom and to my dismay it still won’t read any of my dvd’s. So I run again the firmware application (this time I forgot to close all running application, specially the anti-virus) errors followed aftermath.

Reboot once again, this time the LED on my dvd-rom won’t twinkle, hmmmm kinda strange. Click on MyComputer and to my surprise there’s no more dvd-rom icon that was installed. Restart my pc and went to BIOS and it cannot detect my dvdrom also. I guess this is the permanent damage they were saying.

Boot again my pc and search online for some remedies. I’ve seen lots of the same scenarios online where they hopelessly treated their dvdrom as dead unit or one big paperweight. But I don’t lose hope that fast (specially if I don’t have money to buy a new one) , until I stumbled into this forum where they found a way to bring back the dead dvdrom’s (not humans lol).

It was posted at Computing.net by a certain “Mr.Romero” but I think the detailed instructions came from “takero”. Well whoever you guys, I just want you to know that my dvdrom has came back to life and start twinkling again (Yipeee!), It still cannot read dvd’s but whattaheck, it can read and burn cd’s, I guess it was better than being a paperweight. Thanks guys!
